Players seek a DM for an Iron Heroes campaign

Myself and 3-4 friends are looking for a DM in Ottawa interested in running an Iron Heroes campaign with lots of opportunity for roleplaying and story/plot development. Talking to the other guys and gal, Saturdays are best for us.

Iron Heroes is a D&D 3.5 edition “advanced” rulebook (written by Mike Mearls, the same guy who did D&D 4th edition).  It’s not quite a campaign setting (as there is no setting, like in Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms) but rather alternate rules for low-magic, gritty, high-adventure D&D.

The major differences are the lack of races, new classes, the focus on dynamic action (challenges and stunts), and the absence of magic items.  (There are very few magic items and those that exist are usually artifact calibre.)  Characters distinguish themselves by their skills, feats and masteries.  A good way to summarize Iron Heroes is this quote:

“You are not your magic weapon and armor. You are not your spell buffs. You are not how much gold you have, or how many times you’ve been raised from the dead. When a Big Bad Demon snaps your sword in two, you do not cry because that was your Holy Avenger. You leap onto its back, climb up to its head, punch it in the eye, then get a new damn sword off of the next humanoid you headbutt to death.”

For more information, check out this wikipedia entry on it.

A few character concepts are in the bag: one wants to be an Arcanist*, I really want to play a Man-at-Arms (perhaps dabbling a bit in Armiger) and another wants to be an Executioner. Two are still coming up with ideas but one is interested in either an Archer or Thief, and the other might be a Hunter.

We’re fine with agreed-upon houserules, variant rules, etc. For example, something we really like is the masterwork items variant rules (found here).

* The guy who is looking to play the Arcanist wants to use True Sorcery’s variant Arcanist as well as the True Sorcery magic system (the book is based on the Black Company magic mechanics).  The magic system in Iron Heroes is pretty weak whereas True Sorcery’s system is the best we’ve ever seen.

Anyhoo, if you’re interested, please send me an email at patrick.riegertATgmail.com .  Thanks!

    Hey gang,

I think that GPO is perfect for this sort of thing! Why not hook up with Patrick and his mates at the next cycle and see if the group is a good fit?
